In fact, NASA has multiple micro-cultures that are the result of a decentralized workforce that is dispersed across many NASA Space and Research Centers. However, defining the culture at NASA is much harder than just listing its four state values. NASA is known as a world-class institution routinely defining the cutting edge of science, aeronautics, and space exploration, and has a history of employing the very best talent, long recognized as the Best Place to Work in the Federal Government a title it has held for the last 6 years. The values that comprise the NASA culture-safety, integrity, teamwork, and excellence- have contributed to the many successes. Utilizing teleworking and virtualization are not ideal options for everyone, but giving employees options will allow each of them to make their best contributions. It directly helps employees find a balance. Teleworking gives employees a better opportunity to stay engaged in their work life and personal life. For others, teleworking may be an occasional practice like setting up an office at home – likely preferred for those who have family needs. For some employees, teleworking may be a necessity – specifically those who travel frequently or collect data for research. This is again different for different people. Teleworking and virtualization go hand in hand they allow employees to work from anywhere using modern technology. Understanding the current state of this workforce is integral to improving and ensuring the success of NASA employees. NASA enforces no mandatory retirement age and embraces and supports the rich diversity and experience of this critical cohort.
